Obsidian is one of the most traditional scrying tools as it gives a mirror-like finish when polished and it helps to reveal what is hidden. The black comes from the iron content in this form of lava which has rapidly cooled and structurally, it is more like glass than a crystal, so its energetic properties are not immediately apparent. However, it is a potent healing tool and can bring deep old emotions and traumas to the surface, sometimes surprisingly quickly, so it needs to be used mindfully and check for appropriateness before undergoing a deep investigation or healing. These properties link it to the planet Pluto and the sign of Scorpio, and bring in their transformational qualities. Obsidian helps to break down outworn patterns and its sharp edges correlate with its ability to cut old ties and hooks and to cut out what is no longer needed. It is probably the most common shape to see shaped into arrowheads, which again, can be used to cut and form, so please handle with care!
